Farming, Community and Volunteering
We invite you to peel back the many layers of our beautiful valley and engage more deeply on your next visit with our people, our places and our landscape.
Get closer to nature with guided walks and community paths created to benefit both locals and residents. Take a sustainable approach to your holiday, catch the train to Penrith then walk the Eamont Way to Pooley Bridge – your northern Ullswater holiday hub. From there, discover the valley via a network of foot and cycle paths, by ‘Steamer’ or by ‘Hopper Bus’.
New to the fells? Try a National Park guided ranger walk – all ages and abilities welcome!
Understand the cycle of the seasons and how we live with, and on, the land – take a farm visit with Miller Farming, have a look at the habitat improvement projects undertaken by Ullswater CIC or volunteer some of your time with the gorgeous Lowther Castle and Gardens or with the National Trust and their vital nature conservation projects.
Discover local produce – from Fabi’s Fabulous Milk (they also do Wagyu steaks and eggs!) to Gowbarrow Hall Farm meat boxes – try them on holiday then order for delivery once back home!
Expand your horizons and local knowledge with a Friends of the Ullswater Way talk held monthly in local community venues around the valley.
Mosedale, Penrith, Cumbria
Mosedale End Farm is a traditional Lake District hill farm offering B&B and Glamping holidays on a working sheep & beef farm.
Home from home comforts such as a Homemade slice of cake & fresh milk to welcome you, a fridge, microwave, Kettle & toaster is all standard in our en suite Bedrooms and One and Only Glamping Pod.
For 300 years visitors have been drawn here, where rainwater runs from the fells into Aira Beck and thunders in one 65-foot leap over the falls. Yet, Aira Force is much more than an impressive waterfall. A network of trails weaves its way from Ullswater lakeshore to Gowbarrow summit, passing towering Himalayan firs, rare red squirrels, woodland glades, picnic spots and views out across Ullswater.
Glenridding, Penrith, Cumbria
Ullswater Catchment Management CIC works with farmers and landowners to improve flood resilience and the natural environment through practical projects and solutions. We believe farming and nature can exist and flourish together. By improving soil and habitat management, farming can be part of the solution to nature recovery, carbon sequestration, and flood resilience, whilst also producing sustainable healthy food.
Little can prepare you for the impact of seeing the ruins of Lowther Castle for the first time. The gardens are likewise stunning. The castle is the third building to inhabit the majestic site, while the gardens retain their original 17th century plan.
