The route takes you northwards along the River Eamont and through the historic meadows and parkland to Dalemain Mansion, home to the Hasell family for eleven generations, with its Mediaeval Hall tea room, before passing the 14 Century keep of Dacre castle and the village of Dacre with the 18th century Horse & Farrier Inn and the fascinating St Andrews church, a site of religious worship since the 8th century which boasts mysterious ‘bears’, possibly Roman lion statues, the engraved Whistler window and Whitelaw stained glass. before returning southwards to Soulby on country lanes, and then dropping down in view of Ullswater towards Dunmallard, the conical wood at the eastern end of the lake.
