"A haven of peace and tranquillity"

Lowthwaite is situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, only three miles from Ullswater with views of Helvellyn and Blencathra. We, Jim and Tine, have fully renovated the house to make a lovely family home and a place where our guests can feel welcome and at home. We are the only remaining dwelling in the hamlet of Lowthwaite, and guests have often described the place as a "haven of peace and tranquillity".

Rooms

We have four beautiful and differently styled bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms.

This picture shows you our very special breakfast/dining room. Most of our furniture was handmade in Tanzania, where we had a business arranging Kilimanjaro climbs, and the furniture adds a very distinctive style to all of our rooms.

We are keen walkers, though we currently don't get out on the fells nearly as much as we would like. We are happy to help with advice and ideas,and there is also a good library with guidebooks and maps.

Walks

There are some good walks from the door, the best going along Gowbarrow Fell above Ullswater (see picture) to Aira Force (waterfall) and back again through the unspoilt Matterdale valley.

A small walk up Little Mell Fell behind our house is very rewarding, especially in clear weather, with wonderful views over the Lakeland Fells, the Pennines and across the Solway to Scotland.

Children

We are very happy to welcome children of all ages and our two girls love the company. Here they are enjoying the winter weather.

Two of the big rooms are well suited for families, either for three or four people in one room or used together for a bigger family or a group of friends.

Personal service

Last, but not least, we do our best to make our guests feel at home and to help with special requests, whether it's a diet, a celebration, a weekend away with friends or a car breakdown. We try to work by the motto "nothing is too much trouble".
