‘Tourism and the Visitor Economy’ with Lord Inglewood

Presented by The Friends of the Ullswater Way
We are happy to announce that FOUW will continue its 2024 ‘Understanding Ullswater Evening Talks’ with a talk by Lord Richard Inglewood entitled:
‘Tourism and the Visitor Economy’
The talk will take place at 7.30 pm on Thursday 1st August at Watermillock Village Hall and on ZOOM. All are very welcome.
Richard Inglewood lives at Hutton-in-the-Forest and farms in the Lake District. He is a barrister, and chartered surveyor, with a remarkable diversity of interests and experiences in a wide variety of fields, from antiquities and historic buildings, to the arts and culture, to conservation of wildlife and farming the uplands.
He was a member of the Lake District Planning Board from 1984–89 and chaired its Development Cultural Committee. He represented the area in the European Parliament from 1989–1994, and from 1999-2004, and was Minister in the House of Lords’ Department for National Heritage. He was chairman of the Cumbria Tourist Board from 2004-2019. He has recently chaired the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership, and is President of Historic Buildings & Places. He has served as Vice Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria since 2013.
We in FOUW have been privileged that he has served as our Patron since our foundation.
He wants to initiate a wider discussion in his talk about the impact of the 21st Century Economy on the Lake District in particular and on Conservation more widely. He has concerns about current trends and will cite cases both in the Lakes and in Europe to illustrate the need for these issues to be recognised and addressed.
In common with all our talks, this talk is free, but donations will be welcome. 50 % of donations received will go to FOUW, and 50% to Lord Inglewood’s charity of choice.
Gordon Lightburn, Chair of FOUW said: The impact of 21st century tourism upon an area so vulnerably sensitive as the Lake District is both blessing and curse. FOUW are delighted to welcome Lord Inglewood to share with us his views on this topic from his unique perspective. The challenge of remedying a common collective good, for residents, visitors, nature and landscape is one we must not shirk. This promises to be a thought-provoking evening! We hope you will join us.
Please register by writing to Tim Clarke at info@ullswaterheritage.org, indicating whether you will attend in person or on ZOOM.
Background: FOUW was created in April 2016 to promote awareness of the culture and natural heritage around the Ullswater Way. It was granted charitable status in August 2019
