FOUW Evening Talk Protect the best, restore the rest: Nature recovery in Freshwaters

6th November @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Thursday 6th November at Glenridding Village Hall and on ZOOM
We are very happy to announce that FOUW’s next ‘Understanding Ullswater Evening Talk’ will be given by Dr Louise Lavictoire, Head of Science, the Freshwater Biological Association (FBA), Windermere.

Protect the best, restore the rest: Nature recovery in freshwaters
It will take place at 7.30 pm Thursday 6th November,
Glenridding Village Hall and ZOOM

Louise has worked in species recovery for almost 20 years, initially focussing on saving populations of the freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) from extinction in England. Latterly she has focussed on Arctic charr conservation in the Lake District. She has worked for the FBA, with short stints in Natural England and at Missouri State University in the USA.
Louise’s talk will focus on the Lake District Arctic Charr Recovery & Management project (LD-CHARM), which aims to better understand and restore English populations of the iconic Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus). The Arctic charr still resides in some of the Lake District lakes, but became extinct in Ullswater about 150 years ago. She will talk about understanding how and why populations have fluctuated over time and how this can help us improve management and conservation decisions today.
She will also indicate the wider work being carried out by the FBA and the recent collaboration between the FBA and FOUW to develop a pioneering Citizen Science project on Ullswater to monitor water quality.
Gordon Lightburn, Chair of FOUW, said: ” ‘Historical records show that many of our lakes sustained considerable fisheries. The research that the FBA is doing shows the importance of understanding all the factors involved. We look forward to hearing Louise’s account about current efforts to restore nature and biodiversity in our lakes’
In common with all our talks, this talk is free, but donations will be welcome. 50 % of donations received will go to FOUW, and 50% to Louise’s charity of choice.
In common with all our talks, this talk is Free, but donations – we suggest £5 or more – are welcome. 50 % of any donations received will be passed on to FOUW, and 50% to the charity of Louise’s choice.
