SUMMARY:Nordic Walking For The Fells
DESCRIPTION:Start time: 10am – 1pm \nInstructor: Nicky Merrett \nLocation: Glenridding Tourist Information\, Ullswater \nThe Nordic Walking technique is an artform. \nThe art of efficient movement and power whilst staying relaxed\, with free and fluid movement over the ground with 4 legs. \nYou don’t realise what you don’t know\, about your own body until you come along and have a go… \nOur true belief – 4 legs are better than 2 in the fells. \nOUR INSTRUCTORS: \nLearn these techniques with our Hiking Highs experts\, Nicky Merrett\, AKA Nordic Nic since 2015\, or Sean Bolland our new expert instructor. Both Nicky & Sean are qualified instructors with British Nordic Walking. They will take you through the ‘10 Steps to Nordic Walking’ in line with INWA (International Nordic Walking Federation) guidelines\, enabling a fantastic and efficient technique to be developed over your Nordic Walking journey. \nNORDIC WALKING BENEFITS: \nUse 90% of your muscles\, by using upper body equally as hard as lower body \nImprove & correct your posture \nStrengthen your lower back & core muscles \nIncrease your cardiovascular and aerobic fitness \nLift pelvic floor\, essential for everyone\, this is where the power for our shoulder/arm strength originates in the body \nAlleviate pressure on knees/hips/ankles for the duration of your hikes \nIncrease uphill speed by ⅓ with correct posture and pole plant \nManage your poles over technical or tricky ground\, to give confidence. \nHave excellent ‘pole etiquette’ around other walkers\, no one likes poles flying everywhere at gates/stiles or when not being used \nTake your hiking to the next level \nAND most of all have fun in the fells with 4 legs! \nCOURSE INFORMATION: \nOur regular 3 hour courses are over a 3 mile route\, stopping regularly to learn the next step and understanding the Nordic style tools for keeping fit outdoors with poles. WE even have a go at skipping with poles\, and demonstrate running with poles. You have a go at both if you like\, but definitely not compulsory… \nCourse dates: \n4th of every month\, alternating between Glenridding\, Keswick & Grasmere. \n18th of every month – Staveley and occasionally Ambleside or Grasmere \nBespoke courses can be arranged\, with a gentler outlook\, tailored completely for you and your friends\, or we may be able to put on an additional group course for 90 minutes if you feel this is more appropriate for you\, by arrangement on a day to suit you. Nothing is set in stone with Hiking Highs\, and all is flexible! \nPOLES \nLeki Nordic Walking poles are supplied on all our courses. We will fit you to the right length poles for you. There is the opportunity to buy from range of Leki Nordic Walking poles\, from Hiking Highs\, after our courses. We offer 10% off the retail price to our clients. We strongly recommend you do not buy Nordic Walking or Trekking poles prior to the course which may not be suitable for you\, or described incorrectly on the internet! Please wait until you have tried them out\, remember THESE ARE YOUR NEW FEET and you should not buy shoes you don’t like! \nKit List: \nWaterproof top and bottoms for emergency even on dry day\nHat\nGloves\nDrink & Snack\nWarm layer as we will not be moving quickly\nBegin with the fundamentals of efficient use of poles\, & how this changes the way your body moves once it becomes a quadruped (2 legs / 2 poles!). This course is not strenuous\, and suitable for all ages and fitness levels if you are comfortable with a 3 mile hike. We will have fun with our poles\, even learning to skip for strength and fitness too. \nPlease do email us if you have any questions: nicola@hikinghighs.co.uk

SUMMARY:Patterdale Parish Boundary - Beat The Bounds
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday 4th July 2026 (Traditionally the 1st Saturday in July).\nStart / Finish: Patterdale School\, Ullswater\, CA11 0NL\nDonate if you can’t join in – the event raises funds for Patterdale School \nIn the footsteps of the boys of Patterdale Parish\, who traditionally ‘Beat The Bounds’: A glorious journey along the Patterdale Parish Boundary\, with up to 20 summits – run\, hike or jog 28 miles (full boundary)\, 16 miles (first half)\, 12 miles (second half)\, or 6 miles (mini-beat). It’s fun\, quirky and a magnificent route in all weathers. Participants have some points to hit along the way on the Parish Boundary itself (see route below). \nJoin a 45-year-old tradition in the Ullswater Valley\, along with locals and regular visitors to ‘Beat the Bounds’ of the Patterdale Parish Boundary\, following the Parish Bounds as closely as possible. \nThe Full Parish Boundary\, (including the Ullswater lake crossing – which is not part of this event!) is almost 30 miles long\, with approximately 10\,200 feet of ascent\, taking in many famous Lakeland fells and landmarks including Raise\, Helvellyn\, Nethermost Pike\, Dollywaggon Pike\, Grisedale Tarn\, Fairfield\, Red Screes\, Kirkstone Pass\, High Street\, Angle Tarn and Place Fell. On a good day there are stupendous views throughout the length of the walk. Think of it as a high-level companion to the Ullswater Way! There is\, of course\, a little twist in the route to follow the ‘actual’ parish boundary on the OS map… so your navigation skills will be put to good use! \nBespoke waterproof maps are be available to purchase and be posted out to you in advance of the event on request. \nThe record time to complete the full route is: 5 hours 56 minutes. \nEvent options & routes\nFull Boundary Event:\n28 miles and 10\,200ft ascent [route & gpx]\nStart times for 2025: 5:30am-7:30am rolling start\nCheckpoint: Kirkstone Pass (cut off: 3pm) snacks (sweet and savoury)\, VOOM Nutrition (bars and hydration)\, hot and cold drinks. [route & gpx]\nStart: Kirkstone Pass Summit 12-1pm\nPublic transport is available from Patterdale School to the top of Kirkstone Pass for your start\nA rolling start means you will be able to start between the suggested start times above\, at your leisure \nMore details\nThe fastest known times to complete the full route (from 2024) are:\nMale: Bobby Gard-Storry 2024 – 5 hours\, 53 minutes\, 31 seconds.\nFemale: Karen Nash 8 hours\, 28 minutes\, 50 seconds. \nThe fastest known times to complete the 1st half are:\nMale: Simon Haydock 2025 – 8 hours\, 31 minutes\, 37 seconds.\nFemale: Isobel Meikle 2025 – 8 hours\, 52 minutes\, 19 seconds. \nThe fastest known times to complete the 2nd half are:\nMale: Adam Knodwell 202 – 3 hours\, 6 minutes\, 35 seconds.\nFemale: Angela Wilson 2024 – 3 hours\, 6 minutes\, 41 seconds. \nYou will be provided with a tracker\, which not only gives us reassurance of your location and safety\, but also enables the organisers to ensure you have ticked off a few strategic points along the route – even more reason to make sure your navigation skills are spot on. The strategic points will not necessarily be mountain summits – we will be watching\, which is half the fun of this event! After all it’s the Parish Boundary\, not a route only following the trails. \nFamily and friends are welcome to Kirkstone Top to cheer you on. Why not suggest they take part in the mini-beat? This is a downhill\, 6-mile treasure hunt for families / friends: £10 per family\, individuals £5 (local families walk for free). Please enter online to help us gauge numbers\, or you can still enter on the day (the mini-beat only). This route starts from Kirkstone Pass to finish at Patterdale School. \nYou will be sent participant information\, plus a detailed route description\, by email during lead-up to the event. The GPX routes are also available\, see below. \nTraditionally the event has been a walking event and has been conducted to raise funds for Patterdale Church of England School (the second most remote school in England)\, which could not survive financially without generous donations from fundraising events. (They need to raise £17\,000 per annum in order to stay open.) The event also raises funds for the ministry and work of St Patrick’s Church\, Patterdale. It has become a local tradition to ‘Beat the Bounds’\, since it was established 45 years ago by Stephen Gorton – a resident of Hartsop\, a long-standing member of the church congregation and a founder member of the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team. \nThis event has historically been a free event where folk raised money in the form of a sponsored walk independently\, and can obviously still continue to do so. Confirmation of how to donate your fundraising will be given to all those partaking in the event\, and there is an option to donate additional funds when you enter via Si-Entries. \nYour entry fee will include: warm welcome before you start; tracker fitted to your pack; bespoke race number; Kirkstone checkpoint food & drinks; finishers’ soup & cake. \nCut-off times will be applied at Kirkstone Pass and Boredale Hause (on the 2nd half) to ensure the safe return of all participants to the valley. \nTo make sure this all happens safely and smoothly\, Nicky will organise the event with her experienced event team\, first aiders and event volunteers for many years to come. We hope that the volunteers from the valley and community will also remain highly involved. It is for these reasons that there is now a charge for this event. \nThere will 100% discount for residents of the Patterdale Parish. The discount code will be circulated around the parish and is available by emailing nicola@hikinghighs.co.uk. \nWe would like to thank VOOM Nutrition for supporting this event with a supply of hydration and energy along the way for hikers and runners at Kirkstone Top. \nPlease be advised there is a no refund policy for this event. If you cannot participate and have already entered\, please let us know as we pay for each tracker ordered. Your entry fee will be considered a donation to Patterdale C of E Primary School and St Patrick’s Church\, Patterdale.
