Friends of the Ullswater Way Evening Talk – A Wilder culture Approach Regenerative Farming in the Ullswater Valley

6th June @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

We are happy to announce that FOUW will continue its 2024 ‘Understanding Ullswater Evening Talk’ programme on Thursday 6th June with a talk by Sam and Claire Beaumont from Gowbarrow Hall Farm titled:
‘A Wilderculture Approach; Regenerative Farming in the Ullswater Valley’
The talk will take place at 7.30 pm on Thursday 6th June at Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley
Bridge and on ZOOM. All are welcome.

Sam and Claire, and their two children live at Gowbarrow Hall Farm in Watermillock, where they farm in partnership with Claire’s parents Anne and Richard Lloyd. They now manage a herd of around 70 Beef Shorthorn cattle, 3 Kune Kune pigs and 5 Fell ponies. They moved to Gowbarrow in 2017 and took over the farming operation after Claire’s grandparents had died. With help from Wilderculture CIC they radically changed the direction of the business from high input sheep farming to becoming the only Pasture-for-Life Certified farm in the Lake District for their beef enterprise in 2019.
The farm is now in organic conversion with OF&G, and they have just started a Higher Tier Stewardship scheme focused on restoring Species-Rich grassland, ancient Wood Pasture and Heather Moorland. Their beef and pork are sold direct to customers, they are selling leather products from the farm and they have started a market garden growing vegetables, fruit and herbs. They have recently renovated an old hay barn to use for running educational courses with Wilderculture CIC and are hosting school visits for young people to learn about farming in ways that are more resilient to the economic and ecological challenges that all businesses now face.

They will share their story so far, and outline some of their plans for the future.
